Marc Chagall Museum of Biblical Themes
A popular venue for travelers, while staying in Nice, is the Musee du Message Biblique Marc Chagall, or the Marc Chagall Museum of Biblical Themes. This museum in its beautiful setting is located in the Cimiez hills, close to the Matisse museum and is situated approximately 2 miles from the beaches of Nice.
The artist Marc Chagall was born in Russia in 1887 and in 1937 he became a French citizen. Folklore, biblical themes, surrealism and bright colors are often descriptions connected with Chagall’s artistic creations. Many of Chagall’s works show a spiritual and biblical connection influenced by his Jewish background. Chagall himself assisted in the first years of the museum which was opened in 1973 to host hundreds of his works. This collection of works was donated to France by Marc Chagall and his wife.
The works at the museum include seventeen large canvases which portray different Biblical themes. The first twelve of these massive canvases represent scenes from the Old Testament and the remaining five works depict the theme of love and are inspired by the Song of Songs. The art collection at the museum also includes drawings, oil paintings, sculptures and tapestries created by Marc Chagall. A major feature of the museum is the impressive stained glass windows which were designed especially for the structure by Chagall. The building and the beautiful gardens and pools of the Marc Chagall museum seem to complement the museum and the works of art. A visit to the museum proves to be very enjoyable and also suggests that people visit not only for the contents of the museum, as the building itself is like a work of art. It is reported that the building was designed and made according to the directions of Marc Chagall himself. The museum also has a small shop and visitors may also enjoy the peace and tranquility of a small cafe in the garden.
The museum is open to visitors from Wednesday to Monday and from 10am to 6pm. On the first Sunday of every month, the museum is free to visitors.
Accommodation can be found in the close vicinity of the Marc Chagall museum. Choosing a place to stay in this beautiful area will provide the visitor with several nearby sites and places of interest to visit.
