Different Versions Of Mountain Bikes

A full shock system is critical on a mountain bike. It provides a smoother ride when going over difficult or rocky terrain. If a mountain bike is classed as a full suspension bike it will have both front and rear suspensions. Hard tail mountain bikes have a shock system in place of the front fork and a solid rear fork. Lower end models of mountain bikes do not have a shock system either in the front or rear of the bike.

A cross country rider will need a bike with both descending and climbing ability. The movement in the rear suspension system is only about 4 inches so that it does not cause a problem when trying to climb hills. A cross country mountain bike would usually come with 28 gears so that it is easier to cope with different types of land.

Trial bikes are a little more robust from your standard mountain bike and they are intended for use by more technical mountain bike riders. Trial bikes typically move a little more and you can expect the movement of the suspension to be between 4 and 7 inches. Uphill pedalling will be more difficult but you will in general get a much smoother ride. You will need to decide whether it is worth having a smoother ride against the struggle of pedalling uphill. All terrain cycles is a great place on the web to look for Trek Track Bikes.

Specific downhill mountain bikes can expect up to 8 inches in suspension movement. If you are a downhill racer it is this type of bike that you will need. With more travel in the suspension they are easier to control over harsh terrain at high speeds but are more difficult for pedalling uphill.

Mountain bikes come in different shapes, sizes and types and another popular version is the dirt jump bike. These only have a front suspension and are used for flying over jumps. They usually come with 16 gears which allows the rider to build up speed for making the jumps.
