Infertility and Donating Sperm

Sperm donation is not new as men have been doing this for years and while donating your sperm to be used in producing a baby is a practice that is usually carried out for money.Although it is a relatively simple treatment it is one of the oldest techniques in reproductive medicine dating back 50 years or more. Many couples use sperm donation as a conception method of choice if the male partner has no sperm and as such it has become very well established.

Male infertility rates are on the increase so sperm donation has become very popular as a method to aid conception although multiple treatments are often required before conception actually occurs. Many single women who resort to sperm donation do not have, nor want a male partner but still wish to enjoy being a mother. Sperm donation is, for many couples, the only natural way they will experience the pleasure of parenthood.

There are times when a family member is able to donate sperm but if there is a genetic problem this route cannot be used. However, for others, sperm donation is still a needed and appreciated service and if a couple does not wish or cannot afford to adopt, and the mother would like to carry the child as her own, sperm donation is an option. It is an unfortunate fact that some men who are undergoing chemotherapy for hematological malignancies or germ-cell tumors may not be able to father children after so they are offer sperm donation as an alternative.

As with anything of a reproductive medical nature, the law and ethical committees have become closely related to sperm donation.Sperm donation is also very lucrative and worth far more than donating blood; at a price of approximately 0 per specimen, sperm donation is profitable for many young people. To infertile couples, egg and sperm donors are probably saviors but without them the fertility business wouldn’t have become as big as it is today.More importantly, while sperm donation is a fairly quick and easy procedure, the same cannot be said of egg donation as a woman will have to go through several weeks of injections. Currently a woman have sperm insemination will have this carried out using ejaculated and washed sperm via the uterus or in vitro.

The laws relating to sperm, egg or embryo donation vary dramatically across the world as do the laws relating to donor anonymity. It is a situation that in the long term will need better clarification because if adoption becomes harder or more costly and sperm/egg donation is unavailable, the population rate will start to decrease.
