Will Learning How To Detox The Body Boost Your Natural Defenses
For as long as I can remember I’ve always been lucky with my health. I very rarely got ill, and colds and viruses never seem to latch on to me - or at least not that lasted longer than about 12 hours. So when I completely lost all my energy and was feeling run down all the time it was quite a shock to my system, and getting out of bed in the morning was becoming quite a chore. I’d been to see the doctor on many occasions, and had undergone several test, but every one showed nothing wrong.
I finally went to see an alternative health therapist one day who suggested I needed to detox my body, and put some effort into learning how to detox and eliminate the build up of toxins in my body. It sounded like a good idea, so took it upon myself to learn as much about the process as possible, and get to grips with what is really involved and why the natural health industry recommend healthy detox diets and in particular the 7 day detox diet so strongly.
Something else she recommended I try was a foot detox. I now treat myself to a foot massage at least once a week, if you don’t want to invest in a foot spa, the foot detox patches can do just as good a job - although your don’t get the relaxing foot massage at the same time
So here’s my top tips about how to detox your body.
Lots of water and herbal teas
Making sure you take in plenty of fluids is very important while you are following a detox diet because the water will help your body excrete toxins from your system. It also helps to prevent constipation, improves concentration, and encourage clear skin. Your goal should be to drink about 8 glasses (or 2 liters) of water each day, and a good bit more in hot weather or on your exercise days.
As a rule of thumb, aim to drink an extra half liter of water for every hour you exercise. Tap water which has been filtered to remove the chlorine and impurities is the best option. Ideally drink water that is at room temperature. If you don’t always fancy water, herbal teas - loose leaf tea is the better option if it’s available. Peppermint, camomile, dandelion root, horsetail and yarrow are especially great in a detox as their hidden ingredients help the detox process. Roibosch (Redbush) tea has extra punch as it is very high in OPC antioxidants.
Should You Go Organic
Buying organic produce where possible is better for your health but not totally necessary, especially as the cost can be very high, but a little organic produce will go a long way to getting you started.
It’s not a major problem if you can’t get hold of any organic produce. Just eating plenty of fresh fruits and veg is more important - even if they are non-organic - rather than not get enough of them. Having said that, there are some very beneficial health reasons of eating organic food on a healthy detox diet.
The use of artificial chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers are not allowed when growing organic foods, which means they are very low or even free from toxins like man made chemicals and toxins. Although it’s a controversial area, there is growing evidence that the accumulation of pesticide residues may be related to a lot of the serious health issues we face today.
By comparison, organic foods are processed much less than non-organic. That means they contain no hydrogenated fats, artificial additives, preservatives or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Certain organic foods taste better and have more flavor.
