Care for Your Lawn in Winter

During the cold weather you should ensure that there is no young growth on your lawn as this will make it more likely to succumb to diseases and pests. To do this over time, decrease the cutting height of your lawnmower until you are almost shearing the grass. Undertake this in stages over several weeks as you don’t want to suddenly take off all the leaf tissue or inflict more damage to the turf. You don’t want to let the grass grow above 2 inches during the cold weather.

Administer top dressing to the grass in the late fall. Although it won’t be used by the lawn over the winter it will be stored in the roots and be immediately available for use by the grass in the Spring when new growth starts. At this time you could reseed brown or bare areas. The seeds will germinate in the cooler weather.

Clear up any trash from the grass before the severest weather. This may include branches, logs, equipment, flower pots etc. If left in place when it begins to snow these could smother the grass under the covering of snow and may cause damage which may make the grass vulnerable to disease. During the winter, even though the grass will grow not as fast weeds will thrive so you need to weekly remove weeds to stop them from damaging the lawn.

Also you should still water the lawn during the winter, although less often than you would in the Summer. For most grass varieties watering once a week should be plenty. Other types, for example tall Fescue, rye grass and Kentucky Bluegrass grow well in the winter and will need more water at this time.

Should you use a sprinkler watering system drain out all the water to prevent damage when below freezing. You don’t want to start it up next Spring to find damaged pipes.
